Magnetic Material Synthesis & Characterisation

We aim to revolutionize Power Electronics energy conversion by synthesizing innovative soft-magnetic composites and advanced ferrite materials by thoroughly understanding their high frequency electromagnetic loss mechanisms. This involves integrating advanced material science with sophisticated physical loss modelling techniques. The goal is to establish a new paradigm in material design that yields significantly improved energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness in PE devices. MAGNIFY intends to reduce volumetric iron losses by up to 15% in SMC and 5% in ferrites.

We will design and synthesise innovative magnetic materials complying with the requirements of PE energy converter applications in WP3, i.e. magnetic-electrical characteristics but also thermal and mechanical. The first PhD candidate, DC1, will synthesise new SMC materials by powder metallurgy and characterise their structural and electromagnetic properties by electron microscopy and impedance of fluxometric methods, respectively. The second PhD candidate, DC2, will develop soft ferrites by means of the solid-state processing method, and apply structural, chemical, and morphological material evaluation tools and an electromagnetic evaluation of dimensional parameters. The third PhD candidate, DC3, will focus on the broadband local magnetic characterisation of different magnetic materials via the development and application of transmission line methods. A database with all results will be generated.

The continuous interaction of DC1, DC2, and DC3 with Doctoral Candidates in WP2, particularly with DC4 and DC5, is crucial to develop and enhance the multi-scale and multi-physical material models in view of eddy-current and iron loss computation at the magnetic component level modelling. The work of WP1 Doctoral Candidates will directly contribute to the innovative material synthesis and modelling in the resolution of the Research Objective 1: Tailoring and characterising magnetic materials.
Research Gaps filled – Developing new ferro-ferrite SMCs with optimal magneto-electrical behaviour at HF (500kHz and beyond) with sustainability accent. Experiments with prolonged thermal & stress exposure of ferrites. Determine an optimal ferrite composition.
