Objectives

The growing demand for highly efficient, compact, and environmentally sustainable power electronics has intensified interest in next-generation soft magnetic materials. Soft magnetic composites (SMCs) with advanced insulation systems offer a promising pathway to achieving low core losses, high thermal stability, and robust mechanical performance. In particular, ferro-ferrite–insulated SMCs represent an emerging class of materials capable of operating reliably across wide temperature and frequency ranges, positioning them as key enablers for modern power conversion technologies, renewable energy systems, and electric mobility. This research project aims to develop, optimise, and model such advanced dual-phase SMCs, addressing fundamental scientific challenges while contributing to sustainable materials engineering.

Objective 1

Design and develop advanced soft magnetic composites (SMCs) with ferro-ferrite insulation, enhancing their magnetic, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties for sustainable power electronics applications in wide temperature range.

Objective 2

Optimise material properties by carefully controlling composition, structure, and processing conditions with focus on sustainability.

Objective 3

Conduct comprehensive magnetic characterisation of the developed SMCs across a broad frequency range (DC to MHz), temperature range (-20° C, 200° C) focusing on energy loss and complex permeability.

Objective 4

Model core losses in dualphase SMCs, considering the effects of both short- and long-range eddy currents and skin effects.
